Get rid of constipation and understand how your liver affects your bowl movement

November 25, 2023

If you have ever felt constipated you probably tried so many things to get relieve! you can't really feel comfortable when you are bloated or constipated.

A healthy individual should have 2-3 bowl movement a day, anything less that 1 bowl movement a day (without strain) is considered constipation

if it lasts over a longer period of time, 1 to 3 moths is chronic constipation.

Does this sound familiar? If yes, you are not alone, the average American has 1 BM every 72 hours, that's once every 3 days!

People are often surprised when I mention the relationship between constipation and liver health

When we hear constipation we often think, hydration, fiber, maybe movement? and though these things are crucial for a healthy bowl movement you cant ignore the role of the liver and digestion to keep you regular

The liver produces bile to emulsify and digest fat but bile is also your body’s natural laxative, it softens the stool and promotes peristalsis for fast passage.

Bile also acts as transport agent for fat soluble toxins to be excreted via stool, when this is delayed; these toxins get reabsorbed by the blood, sent back to the liver which create a bigger burden and work load on your liver to detoxify again.

Constipation also contribute to inflammation in the colon and it's usually a contributing factor and a cause for imbalance in gut bacteria which creates even more toxins

Ok I know i can go on and on about this, but what to do?? You tried hydration, you tried adding fiber, you tried exercise, what's the solution?

For the long term, in addition to your hydration, movement and healthy diet supporting liver function and improving the production and flow of bile is essential to improve digestion, absorption and finally get rid of bloating and constipation once and for all!

To improve bile production and flow, include healthy fats which stimulates bile production, incorporate digestive bitters and avoid transfats

Here are my top tips for a quick relieve:

  1. Drink a large glass of warm lemon, ginger water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, not a tea bag, it must be fresh ginger and lemon, feel free to add a teaspoon of honey if you can't tolerate it
  2. Follow that warm drink with movement, brisk walk, quick jog, or a dance, power yoga/ pilates 20 minutes preferably vigorous movement
  3. Your favorite cup of coffee may do the trick, and good news for people with fatty liver as coffee protects from liver damage
  4. Eating prunes and dates which are high in fiber with plenty of water can provide a fast relief ( that may not be suitable if you have diabetes or pre-diabetic )
  5. Incorporating fruits like grapes, watermelon and mango as part of a healthy diet can be very beneficial, they offer high fiber, high water content and high in antioxidants which makes them ideal liver food. Bare in mind grapes and mango are high in calories so take that inconsideration of you are trying to lose weight or have fatty liver
